Os Remedios
It is celebrated on the eighth of September. This festival is the principal, the most solemn and the most well attended; devotees come from all over the surrounding area, from Ferrol, Oza de los Ríos, Paderne… and, of course, from Betanzos itself. The masses at eight, nine, ten and eleven o’clock are always packed. Not many years ago, devotees would climb the street on their knees, often accompanied by a family member or friend who offered support, leaning on a stick or even going alone. Most commonly, their knees were protected with homemade kneepads; in some rare cases, to express greater sacrifice, they would climb with bare skin, which naturally resulted in bleeding wounds. Visits to the image of Our Lady of Os Remedios are continuous throughout the day, and the afternoon procession is always very well attended.
