Os Caneiros Outing

Os Caneiros Outing

River pilgrimage with hundreds of decorated boats sailing up the Mandeo River to Os Caneiros to celebrate an afternoon of music, dancing, drinks and friendship.

The origins of the other great tradition linked to the festive calendar of August differ greatly from the celebration as it is known today. The river outing of Os Caneiros began on the other river that flows through the city, the Mendo, and was connected to the now-disappeared chapel of San Bernardo, located in the monastery of As Cascas, where a celebration took place on the day of its feast, August 20. With the opening of the road to Santiago and the disappearance of this chapel, the celebration was moved to August 17 and relocated to the Campo das Cascas, a poplar-planted area on the banks of the Mendo River. The end of the tradition on the Mendo coincided with the inauguration in 1902 of the Free Public Washhouse of As Cascas, promoted by the García Naveira brothers. The first documented river outing on the Mandeo appears in a newspaper from 1889. From the 20th century onwards, the event grew in size and participation, with hundreds of boats taking part, decorated with flowers, paper lanterns and other ornaments, and prizes awarded to the best-decorated vessels. A second outing is also held on August 25 to bring the patron saint festivities to a close; this celebration is popularly known as “Os Caneiros da Coruña” due to the large number of participants coming from the city of A Coruña.
