Old Bridge of As Cascas

Old Bridge of As Cascas

Old As Cascas Bridge, cited in the year 1200, rebuilt in the 19th century and preserved as a historic element of the urban area.

A bridge with a single arch, parapets, and entirely built of ashlar stone, located in the historic center of the town of Betanzos. Known as the “Puente Viejo de As Cascas,” it is already mentioned in records from the year 1200. In 1809 it was blown up by the British on their way to A Coruña, after which its arch was temporarily replaced with oak beams and planks. In 1839 it was rebuilt in stone, giving it its current appearance. In 1846 a coat of arms bearing the town’s heraldry was added. The bridge is about four metres wide and preserves two western bastions, each with a recessed alcove fitted with seating.
