New Bridge

Preserved arch of the former medieval New Bridge of Betanzos, a historic symbol that once crossed the Mandeo River and connected the town with its surroundings.

The New Bridge of Betanzos was a medieval bridge that crossed the River Mandeo and connected the town of Betanzos with the parish of Santa María de Arriba. It was built in the 14th century in Gothic style and featured three pointed arches. In 1970, the bridge was demolished to make way for a more modern structure. However, the first arch on the town side was preserved and relocated to the side of the Alameda park, where it stands today. The medieval bridge of Betanzos was an important symbol of the town, and its demolition was highly controversial. The preserved arch bears witness to its historical and architectural significance. The bridge was built of stone and had three pointed arches; the central arch spanned 25 metres, making it one of the longest bridges in Galicia at the time.
