Constitution Square

Constitution Square

Historic square in Betanzos featuring the Town Hall, the Clock Tower, the Church of Santiago and several medieval palaces.

Constitution Square is one of the most important historic spaces in Betanzos and has traditionally been considered the city’s centre. It is located on the site of the ancient hillfort where the original settlement was established, which explains its urban importance from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The square is dominated by the Town Hall, a neoclassical building from the 18th century designed by architect Ventura Rodríguez. Nearby stand other buildings of great historical value, such as the Bendaña Palace, of medieval origin (15th century) and rebuilt in the 17th century, as well as the former Casa Núñez, now home to the International Centre of Contemporary Printmaking (CIEC).

The Clock Tower, dating from the 16th century and attached to the Church of Santiago, dominates the square and represents ecclesiastical power. Around the square are also the historic palaces of Bendaña, Lanzós and Taboada, symbols of noble power.

Together with Hermanos García Naveira Square and Galicia Square, Constitution Square forms one of the three main squares of Betanzos and is the place where the city’s political, religious and social importance during the Middle Ages can best be appreciated.
